Learning to Love Better

A Confession and a Commitment to Our Gender Minority Siblings

Dear Friends,

Revoice was created with a beautiful dream: to be a space where every person could experience the life-giving truths that they are fearfully and wonderfully made and that they have a place of unshakable belonging in God’s family. Yet we must also confess that we have not always exemplified these convictions for our gender minority siblings.

While we have recently taken initial steps to clarify Revoice’s theological and ministerial posture regarding gender incongruence and gender dysphoria, we must now also take steps to show more clearly what it means to reflect Christ’s heart in our movement and shared life together. With deep sorrow, we recognize that our engagement with the gender minority community has been unclear, uneven, and inconsistent. The Revoice team knows this has caused confusion and pain for many of our trans siblings—pain that grieves us deeply. There have been moments when our silence spoke louder than our love, when hesitation created distance instead of connection, and when our commitment to belonging was not matched by our actions of support.

We know that as societal hostility toward gender minorities has grievously intensified in recent years, our uncertainties and internal delays have added to your sense of isolation. We know, too, that some gender minorities have felt unseen, unsupported, or even unsafe at Revoice—a space meant to embody Christ’s radical compassion and belonging for all people. We lament the wounds our shortcomings have caused. We sincerely apologize for our lack of clarity, timeliness, and intentionality in making sure you feel seen, valued, and at home within Revoice spaces; and we are sorry for the wounds these actions and inactions have caused. We humbly ask for your forgiveness.

Every life is precious and bears the imprint of God’s creative goodness. As we have lived out our founding mission statement, created by and for sexual minorities seeking to faithfully uphold the historic Christian sexual ethic, we have learned over the years to deeply rejoice in that goodness reflected in our bodies, our stories, our longings, and our struggles. Yet we have also long recognized that, after the Fall, life in these bodies is often marked by mystery and pain. We don’t claim to have all the answers. Many of us continue to wrestle with questions of identity and belonging, aching for wholeness and peace in ways that words can hardly express. In these ways, sexual minorities and gender minorities share a profound bond. This is evident in the fact that, throughout the world, “LGBQ” and “T” have so naturally coalesced as one broader “LGBTQ+” community. Despite more recent societal signs that some sexual minorities are choosing to distance themselves from gender minorities, we hope Revoice will be a place where sexual and gender minorities, together with our allies, can meet as one community united in faith, hope, and love.

Today, we want to speak directly to our trans and gender minority siblings: we are listening. We see you, and we honor the courage and faith it takes to walk with Jesus in the midst of complexity. You are welcome here. Wherever you may be on the journey, you are cherished members of our Revoice community. Your faithfulness in following Christ amid tension and misunderstanding is a witness to all of us. Your perseverance and presence reveal the sustaining grace of God in profound ways, and we give thanks for the gift that your lives are to this movement.

As we look ahead, our prayer and commitment is to walk more faithfully—with humility, perseverance, and courage with our gender minority siblings. Faithfulness for us means listening better, learning more deeply, and showing love in tangible ways. It means ensuring that the voices of gender minorities are not only welcomed but also meaningfully represented in our shared life. It means allowing your insights, your faith, and your experiences to shape who we are becoming as a community of disciples. In the year ahead, you’ll begin to see more of Revoice’s heart for ministry with and for gender minorities expressed in tangible ways.

As has been the case with sexual minorities, the same remains true for gender minorities: we don’t have all the answers. But we are committed to embracing the questions. Our hope is that Revoice will grow ever more into a movement and community that mirrors the heart of Christ: compassionate, faithful, and steadfast in fostering belonging. May we continue to walk this road together, trusting that even in our failures, God’s mercy is enough to lead us into a deeper and truer love.

With profound gratitude for our shared journey,
